Faculty member elected to leadership position of prestigious organization

John Calhoon, MD, professor and cardiothoracic surgeon in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, was recently named first vice president and president-elect of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

“Becoming a member of our largest thoracic surgical society was a significant milestone for me over 30 years ago,” Dr. Calhoon said, noting the important work of the society in advocating for surgeons in the U.S. and other nations and coordinating international charitable outreach and education around the globe.

“Over the years, my partners and I have helped in a variety of these endeavors. It is a privilege to be asked by my STS peers to help continue our specialty’s efforts in all these areas and more in a worldwide fashion,” he said.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a nonprofit organization founded in 1964. It represents over 7,600 surgeons, researchers and other health care professionals worldwide who are dedicated to improving the lives of patients with cardiothoracic diseases.

Dr. Calhoon will assume presidency of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2022.
