UT Health San Antonio infectious disease physicians are offering a podcast series called “COVID Minutes” for anyone who would like to learn more about the pandemic including health care workers, who can earn continuing medical education credits at no cost.

Through the podcasts, faculty experts give insights on what they have learned about COVID-19, including the treatment of patients and research into new cures and vaccines.

“Education is one of the three primary missions of an academic health science center, which is why we are passing along what we have learned to the public and to our colleagues,” explained Jan Patterson, MD, professor of infectious diseases and associate dean for quality and lifelong learning in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.

UT Health San Antonio faculty have been on the front lines throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, treating patients in University Hospital and in UT Health Physicians clinics. They also have played a major role in advising the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s successful response to COVID-19, as well as providing guidance to the Bexar County Jail, nursing homes, school districts and universities on how to manage the spread of the virus in congregate settings.

Faculty have also participated actively in clinical trials for treatments of COVID-19, including the trial leading to FDA approval of remdesivir. They also are knowledgeable about the development of COVID-19 vaccines and plan to participate in a vaccine trial. The university has also devoted 40 labs to COVID-19 basic research.

“These on-demand podcasts are ideal for clinicians on the go and others who want to stay up to date,” Dr. Patterson said.
