February is American Heart Month, and during this time, it is important to better understand, prevent, and treat heart disease.

Heart disease is known as the leading cause of death in the nation. According to the American Heart Association, over 874,000 Americans died of cardiovascular disease in 2019.

Dr. Dawn Hui, a cardiac surgeon with UT Health San Antonio says some of the symptoms of heart disease include:

  • Shortness of breath with everyday activities
  • Swelling in legs, feet, and ankles
  • Trouble sleeping when you lie flat
  • Feeling tired

If you find yourself trying to get back on track physically, but are still wanting to social distance because of the pandemic, Dr. Hui recommends doing a few things:

  • Catching up on household chores
  • Mowing the lawn
  • Simple workouts while watching T.V.
