A new study suggests that exercising with restricted blood flow — by placing cuffs around the upper thigh and inflating them — can improve outcomes for people awaiting total knee replacements. Listen to Texas Public Radio's "Science & Medicine" podcast to hear Gustavo Almeida, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UT Health San Antonio, explain how his patients gained and maintained function after surgery by exercising with restricted blood flow.

Lifelike, talking mannequins train nursing students for real-life scenarios at UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing's Center for Simulation. Now, the center has an accreditation from the prestigious Society for Simulation in Healthcare in the area of Teaching/Education. The designation at this level is highly sought-after — no schools in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth or Austin have it.

A novel protein called ERMA has recently been discovered by researchers at UT Health San Antonio to function as a precision-engineered pump in guiding magnesium. The study finds that ERMA and its regulatory networks "could open new therapeutic avenues for heart conditions."
