Paid holidays: Understanding floating holidays, banked holiday, and the Battle of Flowers holiday
Launched in September 2021, the new Comprehensive Leave Program offers a variety of designated employee holidays. To better understand the leave program, specifically for holidays, find below an explanation of the terminology and how holidays can be used in fiscal year 2022 (Sept. 1, 2021-Aug. 31, 2022).
Banked Holiday
If an employee’s duties require them to work one of the 12 designated paid university holidays on the holiday schedule for fiscal year 2022, the employee will be credited a banked holiday which they can use anytime during the next 12 months following the holiday.
Banked holidays expire if unused after 12 months.
Banked holidays are shown in Kronos as Holiday Banked.
Floating Holiday
Eligible full-time employees receive three floating holidays (or 24 hours) at the start of each fiscal year, which must be used by the end of the fiscal year. Fiscal years run Sept. 1 to Aug. 31.
Unused floating holidays do not carry over to the next fiscal year.
Floating holidays are shown in Kronos as Floating Holiday.
New employees receive prorated floating holidays, which must be used by the end of the current fiscal year:
Hired Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 - Three floating holidays
Hired Dec. 1 to Feb. 28 - Two floating holidays
Hired March 1 to May 31 - One floating holiday
Hired June 1 to Aug. 31 - No floating holidays
Battle of Flowers Holiday
When the new holiday schedule for fiscal year 2022 was set, the date of the Battle of Flowers was unknown. The city of San Antonio has now scheduled the Battle of Flowers parade for Friday, April 8, 2022. UT Health San Antonio will recognize this date as a university holiday, and it has been added to our holiday schedule for fiscal year 2022. Employees who work on this holiday will receive a banked holiday as explained above.
