The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio moves up in Forbes Best-In-State Employers list

Now ranked 12th; fifth among health care/social employers.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) has jumped to 12th on Forbes magazine’s list of Best-In-State Employers 2022, from 34th last year.

UT Health San Antonio made the ranking of 101 employers from all industries, and with major operations in Texas, and is in the top five in the “Healthcare & Social” industry sector. The rankings are based on independent surveys.

“We once again are excited to be included on this prestigious list as a major employer in the region and as a primary catalyst of San Antonio’s $42.4 billion health care and biosciences sector,” said UT Health San Antonio President William L. Henrich, MD, MACP.

“Our institution provides critically important jobs,” he said. “And with a new hospital and other major projects nearing completion, we plan to add more than 1,500 higher-wage jobs over the next five years to serve San Antonio, Bexar County and South Texas.”

Nationwide, Best-In-State Employers 2022 were identified in an independent survey based on a vast sample of approximately 70,000 Americans working for companies with more than 500 employees. Across 25 industry sectors, 1,380 employer brands were ranked among the top employers.

The evaluation was based on direct and indirect recommendations from employees who were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family. Employees also were asked to evaluate other employers in their respective industry and state that stood out either positively or negatively.

UT Health San Antonio drives substantial economic impact with its five professional schools, a diverse workforce of more than 7,000, an annual operating budget of more than $1 billion and a clinical practice that provides more than 2 million patient visits each year, the most of any local medical provider.

It is also the largest research university in South Texas with an annual research portfolio of $380 million.

The institution includes its schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry and health professions, and graduate school of biomedical science; clinical operations at UT Health Physicians outpatient centers; clinical and research functions at its medical, nursing and dental schools; and complex specialty services and robust research at its Mays Cancer Center, Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, and the Greehey Children’s Cancer Center.

The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio graduates the most physicians in South Texas, with faculty and staff educating more than 900 students and training 800 residents a year. UT Health Physicians, the school’s clinical practice of expert physicians, surgeons, advanced practice providers and other health care team members, is the largest vertically integrated medical group in San Antonio, with more than 900 physicians in more than 100 specialties.

“It is an honor for our institution to receive this recognition for a second year in a row,” said Amy Tawney, MBA, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CPC, vice president and chief human resources officer. “This says so much about our people who are critical to making us who we are as UT Health San Antonio and always do everything it takes to ensure we deliver on our missions. I am very proud of our employees and all that they have accomplished over the last year in service to our community.”

  • A defined benefit retirement plan with matching contributions higher than the market average.
