UT Health San Antonio schools ranked among best in the nation

UT Health San Antonio’s schools received national recognition in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best graduate schools for 2024.

The list ranked programs from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions among the best in the country.

The Long School of Medicine ranked 36th out of 123 qualifying schools in the category of medical schools training primary care physicians. The school also remained in the top 50 in the category of research medical schools, ranking 50th out of 130 schools.

“This Top 50 ranking is based on our outstanding teachers and students. We are training the next generation of superb physicians to provide the best medical care possible to our community, and making high impact discoveries in cancer, dementia, obesity and diabetes and aging,” said Robert Hromas, MD, FACP, dean of the Long School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs. “Our high ranking is a tribute to the support that the city of San Antonio and Bexar county, especially University Hospital provides for us. We are grateful for that support,” Hromas said.

The School of Nursing also made the list, ranking 69th out of 169 qualifying programs for its Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

“This is a wonderful accomplishment, especially during a time when quality nurses are so critically needed in our communities,” said Sonya Renae Hardin, PhD, MBA/MHA, APRN, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing. “Our graduate programs are essential to meet the needs of the citizens in Texas, which fares worse than other states in our region for health care.”

The School of Health Professions’ Master of Physician Assistant Studies program ranked 40th out of 211 qualifying programs, within the top 20 percent of all ranked programs.

“We have outstanding training and education programs at UT Health San Antonio and are proud of the national recognition of our excellent programs,” said David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, FASAHP, dean of the School of Health Professions.

The School of Health Professions has two other graduate programs that are ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report, which published its most recent rankings for qualified occupational therapy and physical therapy programs in 2020. The Doctor of Occupational Therapy program ranked in the top 21% of programs, at No. 42 out of 198 programs, and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program ranked in the top half of programs at No. 102 out of 239.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences ranked 100 out of 290 in the publication’s list of the Best Biological Science Programs for 2022. And, while U.S. News & World Report no longer ranks dental schools, UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry was ranked number No. 1 in 1993, 1995 and 1996, the last year the publication ranked U.S. dental schools.

U.S. News and World Report produces graduate school rankings each year to help prospective students determine the best options for their career path. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked. Methodology for rankings is based on faculty resources, academic achievement of entering students and their career paths, and reputational assessments by other schools’ deans and residency directors.
